Nicholson Bridge Day
DESCRIPTION: Nicholson PA celebrates its local landmark this weekend with Bridge Day, honoring the Tunkhannock Viaduct. Nicholson is a small community just north of Scranton along Route 11. You can’t help but notice it as you pass through. When you come around the bend and are greeted by the monolithic bridge, you know right where you are.
Lackawanna Railroad emblem on the Tunkhannock Viaduct: The bridge was dedicated on Nov. 6, 1915 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. When it was completed it was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world. It was built to make the trip from Scranton to Binghamton NY more efficient.
Bridge Day brings residents and railroad enthusiasts together for a day of good food, old-fashioned games and history walks. Performances by several local groups will entertain festival goers throughout the day.
There will be over 50 local vendors selling their wares at the event and you can enter several raffles to win some very cool prizes.
There will be a special 9/11 ceremonies.
If you love history there will be a walk through town showcasing the borough’s churches.
